Nigeria: Foi Bill - Reps Still in Opposition

Abuja — The Freedom of Information bill which has been with the National Assembly for some years now is still being opposed by the House of Representatives.

The bill entitled 'An Act for the Protection of the Privacy of Individuals and to Provide Individuals with a Right of Access to Personal Information About Themselves and for Related Matters, 2008' was sponsored by Hon Uzoma Abonta (PDP, Abia) .

In an interview, Abonta explained that the bill is designed to protect peoples' right to privacy and compel those possessing information on individuals to make them accessible to those it relates, adding that it also provides that such information would not be used for purposes other than for which it was got.
