Nigeria:Anambra Polls - Ojukwu, a Threat to Democracy - Chief Okeke

Abuja — A former gubernatorial candidate of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) in Anambra State in the 2007 elections, Chief Stanley Okeke, has raised an alarm over plans by the chieftain of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Odimegwu Ojukwu, to destabilise democracy in Anambra State, saying security agencies should invite Ojukwu for questioning.

He said Ojukwu's statement that there would be war if the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) decided to field Chief Andy Uba was a threat to democracy not only in Anambra State, but the whole of Nigeria, and, therefore, should not be allowed to pass without a probe.

Okeke also called President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua to intervene by using his position as the leader of the party to ensure that Andy Uba is allowed to fly the party's flag.

In an interview with LEADERSHIP yesterday in Abuja, Okeke, who is coordinating Andy Uba's website for the 2010 polls, said, "Ojukwu's statement is reckless, irresponsible, and highly disappointing of a highly placed elder statesman like him. He has taken decorum to the dustbin and that is regrettable. It is a deliberate plan to incite unrest and create chaos in the polity. Security agents must do their job to ensure that it does not cause any violence or any threat in the state that is already tensed.

According to him, it is only natural for the PDP to allow Andy Uba, who has been elected as governor, to complete his term; that is if he loses at the appeal court on Thursday, saying he is the rightful man to fly the party's flag as doing otherwise would not be proper.

"Uba has contributed immensely to the growth and stability of the PDP in the state and the zone. It is because of this that I want Mr President to use his discretion to intervene and make sure due process is followed. If Uba is given the party's ticket, I assure you there will be little or no crisis at all because, already, all the key stakeholders are with him," he said.
