Abuja — The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), in collaboration with the International Community of the Red Cross (ICRC), Thursday concluded its three-day meeting which is aimed at the promotion, ratification and implementation of key international human law treaties.

The meeting, which was titled 'IHL as a Tool for War and a Means for Peace', held at the Ladi Kwali Hall of Sheraton Hotels and Towers, Abuja, attracted a number of dignitaries and delegates from various countries.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, the honourable minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ojo Maduekwe praised the efforts of the organisers of the seminar and its concerted effort which is aimed at ridding the ECOWAS sub-region of the proliferation of small and light weapons.

Represented by the director of ECOWAS, Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Babatunde Nurudeen, the minister pointed out that the occasion came at a good time when our sub-region and the entire world is desirous of peace at all cost, explaining that in the case of Nigeria, 'it came at the right time on the heels of President Umaru Musa Yar' Adua's amnesty programme to the Niger Delta militants'. He said the amnesty programme had shown that peace is the defining value of any civilisation.

The minister lamented over the negative effects associated with arms proliferation.
