The forum of the nineteen Northern speakers has called on the federal government to hand over the Dadin Kowa Dam to Gombe State government for hydro-electric power generation to boost the epileptic power supply in the North-East sub-region.
The speaker, Borno State House of Assembly, Hon. Goni Ali Modu, who is also the chairman of the 19 Northern Speakers Forum, who has just returned from a Northern Speakers Conference in Gombe, said the dam was capable of generating 39 meggawatts, which would help in no small measure in addressing the power problem of the sub-region.
Hon. Goni said, "The construction of the Dam was completed twenty years ago with the intention of generating 34 megawatts, and if upgraded, would generate 39 megawatts which is sufficient enough to take care of the three states of Borno, Gombe and Yobe." He said the meeting also called on the federal government to pump money into the Mambilla hydro-electric power supply to actualise the federal government's 7-point agenda.
He stated that the Gombe State government had indicated interest to take over the dam for power generation purposes, and has written to federal government several times but got no response, noting that the importance of the dam cannot be over emphasised.
