Takoradi — ERIC OGBAMEY SELBY, a youth activist of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has declared his intention to contest the chairmanship of the party in the Evalue-Gwira constituency in the Western region, in the upcoming constituency elections.

Mr. Selby, 33, told The Chronicle in an interview that his main concern and priority would be to unite the party in the constituency to forge ahead for the 2012 elections.

He would also work with the rank and file to build a strong force to maintain the dominance of the party in the constituency, and to improve the fortunes of the NPP in the Nzema area where the party's performance over the years has not been encouraging.

"My main focus is to help our party to improve its organizational aptitude. I will do that by helping to build the capacity of all the party faithfuls whose commitment, loyalty and dedication to the course of our party's fortunes in the area is most likely going to dwindle if we don't take proactive steps and put in place pragmatic measures to deal with the acrimonies in the party. And I am committed to doing just that," he said

The youth activist further told The Chronicle that he would compile accurate data to enhance proper dissemination of information about the constituency and its performance.

He would also be embarking on a programme that would ensure that the welfare of constituency members are being addressed.

"I will use this programme to bring all those who are embittered back to the party," he assured.

The party, according to the aspiring chairman, holds the key to Ghana's economic fortunes and the constituency should be able to play a significant role in ensuring that the party comes back to power in 2012.

Mr. Selby, who claims to be a member of the NPP since 1992, and was part of the Great Alliance in 1996, assured the party's foot soldiers of his commitment to securing the relevant information for party members to appreciate what is going on in the party.

Mr. Ogbamey Selby, who was a polling station agent for the NPP in the 2000 elections at Essuawuah at Gwira in the Evalue-Gwira constituency, praised the Kufuor administration for its performance. "I can assure you that we will use our unbeatable record in government to wrestle power back in 2012," he added.

The International image of Ghana was seriously battered when news broke out that some Ministers who served in the Rawlings government took bribes from Mabey and Johnson, a construction firm based in the United Kingdom. Surely, this news might have come as an embarrassment to former President Rawlings in particular, since he has been at the forefront of fighting against corruption in the country.

The Chronicle is, therefore, not surprised with Mr. Rawlings' warning to all Ministers and other government appointees not to indulge in corrupt practices that would undermine the confidence that the people of Ghana have in the Atta Mills' government. Corruption can never be eliminated from society but can be minimized, and that is why we support the call by the former President for all serving Ministers to stay clear of the corruption canker.

Any country where corruption is so pervasive hardly sees progress, and we can cite the former Zaire, now Democratic Republic of Congo, as an example.
