Maputo — The central Mozambican province of Manica will be sending 12 deputies from the ruling Frelimo party, and four from the main opposition party, Renamo, according to the results from the province in Wednesday's general election.
The Manica results, as broadcast on Radio Mozambique, are:
Presidential election
Daviz Simango (MDM): 19,621 Armando Guebuza (Frelimo): 182,306 Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo): 57,929
Parliamentary election
Frelimo: 180,698 Renamo: 64,206
None of the other four parties on the ballot paper in Manica won enough votes to elect a deputy. The radio gave the turnout in Manica as 43.5 per cent.
The full results are also now available from the city of Beira, the only major urban area in the country which Frelimo did not win. Instead the city's mayor, Daviz Simango, leader of the MDM, had a victory of around 10,000 votes over Guebuza. Dhlakama trailed a humiliating third in a city that was once regarded as a Renamo stronghold. The results were:
Daviz Simango (MDM): 59,548 (50.9 per cent) Armando Guebuza (Frelimo): 49,553 (42.4 per cent) Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo): 7,789 (6.7 per cent)
Parliamentary election
Frelimo: 49,150 (42.1 per cent) Renamo: 7,786 (6.8 per cent) MDM: 55,455 (48.4 per cent)
Four other parties were running in the parliamentary election, but received derisory results. 118,145 citizens of Beira voted - which was a turnout of 45.6 per cent.
