Maputo — The final results from last Wednesday's general election in the northern province of Cabo Delgado show incumbent president Armando Guebuza and the ruling Frelimo Party winning over 80 per cent of the vote.
The results, as given by the Provincial Elections Commission, and read out over Radio Mozambique, were as follows:
Presidential election
Daviz Simango (MDM): 20,097 (5.6 per cent) Armando Guebuza (Frelimo): 285,423 (80.1 per cent) Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo): 50,621 (14.2 per cent)
Parliamentary election
Frelimo: 276,423 (81.1 per cent) Renamo: 50,165 (14.7 per cent)
The other 4.2 per cent of the parliamentary vote was scattered among five minor parties, only one of which achieved over one per cent. This result will give Frelimo 19 of Cabo Delgado's 22 seats, leaving only three for Renamo. In the 2004 election, Frelimo took 18 seats in Cabo Delgado and Renamo four.
An official of the MDM told Radio Mozambique there had been fraud in Cabo Delgado. His only evidence, however, was a claim that one man was caught trying to slip six ballot papers into a ballot box in a polling station in Pemba, the provincial capital.
Radio Mozambique also reported the results from the Frelimo stronghold in Gaza, in the south of the country. These were:
Presidential election
Daviz Simango (MDM): 12,278 (3.3 per cent) Armando Guebuza (Frelimo): 356,221 (95.7 per cent) Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo): 3,451 (0.93 per cent)
Parliamentary election
Frelimo: 352,896 (96.9 per cent) Renamo: 5,106 (1.4 per cent)
This time there were six minor parties on the ballot paper, none of whom won more than 0.4 per cent of the vote. On this result, Frelimo wins all 16 of Gaza's parliamentary seats. This is the third election in a row in which Renamo has not won a single seat in Gaza.
