Maputo — The full results of last Wednesday's general election from the central Mozambican province of Sofala confirm that the former rebel movement Renamo, which once enjoyed hegemony in this province, has fallen to third place, behind both the ruling Frelimo Party, and the breakaway Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM).
The results, announced by the Sofala provincial elections commission, and read out over Radio Mozambique, are as follows:
Presidential election
Daviz Simango (MDM): 84,127 Armando Guebuza (Frelimo): 168,282 Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo): 72,978
Parliamentary election
Frelimo: 164,415 Renamo: 72,482 MDM: 75,306
Four minor parties competed, and received a handful of votes, nowhere near enough to elect any parliamentary deputies. Of the 20 seats for Sofala in the next parliament, 11 will be occupied by Frelimo, five by the MDM and four by Renamo.
In the outgoing parliament, Sofala had 22 seats, 16 of them held by Renamo and six by Frelimo. Some of the current Renamo deputies from Sofala, such as Ismael Mussa and Lutero Simango, are now on the MDM's lists.
