Kilosa — Tigo has donated 50 bicycles worth 6 million to help students who move on foot a long distance that covers 6 to 20 kilometers away from their respective schools in Gairo ward in Kilosa district.

Speaking during the handover ceremony in Kilosa town last weekend, Tigo public relations officer Mr Jackson Mbando said that the donation was a part of Tigo's initiatives in boosting the government on education development.

"This donation is a part of our initiatives in contributing to education sector in the country and we shall keep on collaborating with other education stakeholders in the country in alleviating poverty" he said.

He said that the company in collaboration with the organizer of the event, a non government organization called Yawe Economic Development Group (Yedegro) from Dar es salaam had decided to help the young girls from nine secondary schools in the area who work extra miles on foot walking to school from villages.

"Our donation will rescue these young girls from a danger of being lured by culprit men who normally seduce them by giving offers of bicycle transport when they are on the way back home" he said.

However, the area legislator Mr Clement Lyamba warned the students to use the bicycles for intended purposes as he said the bicycles were catalyst for development.

"Make sure you keep these bicycles safely and use them for intended purpose, do not take them to fetch water" he said.
