Luanda — The process of disarmament of people in illegal possession of firearms has created a feeling of greater security and stability within the population.

This was said by the deputy general commander of the National Police, Paulo de Almeida, during an interview to Angop, on the occasion of the World Disarmament Week, October 24 -31.

The police high ranking officer mentioned a sharp drop in crime committed with firearms in the country.

"The signs are positive and we think that the removal of firearms from the hands of citizens has created a feeling of greater security and stability", said Paulo de Almeida.

In Angola the process of disarmament people in illegal possession of fire arms started in May, 2008.The national commission for disarmament was created to fight the spread of small weapons, mainly those acquired illegally during the armed conflict in the country.
