Luanda — The deputy commander of the National Police, chief-commissioner, Paulo de Almeida, expressed concern about the use of firearms by children in schools in the country.

The police officer was speaking to Angop, on the occasion of the World Disarmament Week, October 24-31.

He on the occasion mentioned the case of a teenager recently found in possession of a firearm in a Luanda secondary school which, he said, should not happen again as it poses a danger for the society.

"This child, obviously obtained the arm from relatives or someone closely related to him,. That arm should not be in the house. We have been warning that all citizens still in their illegal possession, must hand them to the police authorities", he stated.

He added that in possession of that arm, the child might use it in an account settlement or discord with a colleague or the teacher.

The process of disarming citizens in illegal possession of firearms started in May 2008 and comprises four phases. They are "Organisation and sensitisation", "Voluntary surrender", "Coercive disarming" and "Control".

The National Commission for Disarmament was created with the purpose of reducing the proliferation of firearms, especially those illegally owned.
