Liberia Government (Monrovia)
3 November 2009
press release
Following is the text of a statement issued by H.E. President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on Monday, 2 November 2009:
News of the brutal murder of Keith Jubah, Chairman of the Public Procurement Concessions Commission (PPCC), came as a shocking blow to me today. Keith was like a son to me, and his senseless death has touched and saddened me greatly.
Here was a young professional who completed his studies as a Chemical Engineer and came home to make his contribution. He didn't seek out a government job; instead, he focused on the private sector. He first worked for the Firestone Rubber Plantation; then for the Morris Rubber Farm, where he was a shareholder and key manager in an operation that produced some of the best quality rubber in the country, with more valued added.
The PPCC was established to ensure transparency and fairness in the awarding of contracts for government purchases, bids and tenders. As its Chairman, Keith championed the cause, looking out for government's interests and those of the Liberian people. An advocate for Liberian businesses, he encouraged Liberians to also bid for government contracts.
This government is a protector of freedoms and a promoter of human rights. Nevertheless, the victimization of others, such as the gruesome murder of an exemplary citizen, cannot go unpunished. To do so would be to flout justice and to discourage other enterprising Liberians who want to return home and play their part in rebuilding this country.
As President, I call on all Liberians to act in their communities to end violence, to stop those who would bring death and destruction to innocent people. I want to assure my fellow Liberians that this horrific act of violence will in no way deter our administration from the fight for a better Liberia for all its people.
Keith Jubah was a fair, generous and decent human being, and Liberia has lost one of its brightest sons. I mourn his loss, and pray that his soul will rest in perfect peace.
