Kenya: Leaders Want Eastern Split Into Three Areas

Nairobi — Eastern province leaders came out in their numbers to give their views on boundary review.

Led by Vice president Kalonzo Musyoka and Energy minister Kiraitu Murungi, the leaders asked the Interim Independent Boundaries Review Commission to come up with recommendations that will look into injustices in the distribution of resources.

They noted that the border review is an emotive issue and should be addressed with regard to the country's diversity.

Mr Kiraitu who is also the PNU secretary general maintained his earlier stand that the elective units be based on the number of voters but he was quick to add that the formulas adopted by the different camps were all targeted at helping the people being represented.

"The formulas adopted by the commission are being debated with reference to where individuals come from so don't treat the debates negatively. The boundaries created will determine allocation of resources and government funds like the CDF," Kiraitu told the commission.

Speaking in Embu, the leaders representing said that the IIBRC should look into creation of constituencies from existing districts.

Further, the leaders unanimously agreed that the province needs to be split into three: Upper Eastern, Eastern and Lower Eastern provinces.

The proposals for the lower eastern parliamentary group were voiced by Philip Kaloki (Kibwezi) who read a proposal signed by area MPs including the Vice President.

The VP asked the commission to rely on the data it collects locally saying that dependence on foreigners is not always the best solution.
