Zambia: Minister Dismisses Kavindele's Allegations

4 November 2009

DEFENCE Minister, Kalombo Mwansa has dismissed allegations by former vice-president, Enoch Kavindele that President Rupiah Banda's sons are involved in the procurement of arms for the country.

Dr Mwansa said in a statement in reaction to Press reports published in the media on Monday that the statement by Mr Kavindele was a total fabrication.

"As a ministry, we take strong exception to Mr Kavindele's assertion about the president's sons being involved in the procurement of arms.

"We wish to inform the nation that this assertion by Mr Kavindele has no grain of truth in it," Dr Mwansa said.

The minister said the procurement of arms was the responsibility of the Ministry of Defence.

"As far as we are concerned, no son of the president, or indeed any of his relatives, has approached the ministry on procurement of arms," he said.

He said the assertion by Mr Kavindele should be dismissed with the contempt it deserves.
