Uganda: 200 Defect to NRM in Ssembabule

3 November 2009

Kampala — OVER 200 members of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and the Democratic Party (DP) in Ssembabule district have defected to the National Resistance Movement (NRM).

The FDC supporters were led by the former district party secretary, Abdu Lukanga, while the DP women chairperson, Joseph Nakiganda, led the group from his party.

"We have seen the light. We were misled by some district leaders and since we failed to secure election victory over the NRM, we have decided to join the party," Lukanga said.

The team was received by the Ssembabule NRM chairperson, Sam Kutesa, at a function held at Rainball Motel on Saturday.

The NRM secretary general, Amama Mbabazi, said he was overwhelmed by the numbers of FDC supporters crossing to his party.

"We recently received the FDC pillar, John Butime. In Arua, 13,000 opposition supporters crossed to the NRM. In Yumbe, 8,862 opposition members joined our party, while in Iganga, they have asked me to go for similar events."

Mbabazi said Independent candidates, who initially subscribed to the NRM, must sign a memorandum of understanding with the party before the start of primary elections next year.

"Why has the Ssembabule LC5 chairperson, Herman Ssentongo, refused to sign the memorandum of understanding? He is putting his political career at risk," Mbabazi said.

He also warned NRM councillors, who agreed to serve on the opposition committees in the local governments, of disciplinary action.
