Nigeria: No Room For Errors As Tourney Enters Knockout Stage

Abuja — There will be no more room for mistakes because any error could result in dire consequences and possible elimination as the Under-17 World Cup enters the second round today.

The championship's second round will be decided by knockout. The matches will be played today and tomorrow in the eight centres of the championship.

Top of the bill of today's games is the clash between Group B leaders, Switzerland and Group A third placed team, Germany. The two European teams have played attractive football in this tournament.

Germany travelled to Nigeria as the European champions and they lived up to that billing in their first round games, where they won one, drew one and lost one.

Nigeria's Golden Eaglets dealt their credentials a severe blow in the tournament's opening game when the hosts overhauled the European champions' three-goal lead to draw level.

Argentina, the South American runners-up, survived a first half goal deficit to outscore the Germans 2-1. Germany sealed their place as the group's third best team with a 3-1 win over the group's whipping team, Honduras in the last game of Group A.

Switzerland have had an oustanding outing on their debut in the championship. They claimed the scalps of two former champions, Mexico and three-time winners, Brazil.

They have shown they are a complete side, defending stoutly and scoring freely. The Swiss had a 100 percent record, winning all three matches against Mexico, Japan and Brazil, 2-0, 4-3 and 1-0 respectively.

Dany Ryser, the Swiss coach, has shown he is a tactician. His strategy and team formation had been largely based on the strength and weaknesses of his opponents.

They have worked well so far and will be facing a big task against their fellow Europeans today at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

Soccer fans in Ijebu-Ode should look forward to an exciting time when Argentina entertain Colombia at the Gateway International Stadium.

Both South American countries finished second in their respective groups to set up the confrontation.

Argentina were runners-up to Nigeria in Group A while Colombia were next to Iran in Calabar. The Colombians won a game and drew two, while the Argies lost one and won two.

Argentina could have opted for another opponents instead of fellow Americans.

Italy will be home to the U.S. at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna which could be a repeat of their 2005 clash in Peru, where the Americans outplayed the Italians 3-1.

While Italy topped their group in Kaduna with seven points, the U.S. placed second in Group E behind Spain.

Turkey take on the United Arab Emirates at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.

Can the UAE break the deadlock of being the first team to see the back of the Turkish net? That is the big poser for fans as the Turks have maintained a clean slate in the championship so far.
