Abuja — Tragedy struck Sunday along the Abuja/Keffi expressway when a loaded tipper veered off the road and crushed two teenage hawkers and a man, killing one of the hawkers called Zainab on the spot.
The tipper, which was transporting sand, was heading towards Keffi when the driver lost control at top speed.The hawkers, identified as Zainab and Asma'u, were selling groundnuts to an unidentified man when the tipper lost control and ran into them, crushing them to a culvert by the roadside.
"Zainab, also known as Hajiya died on the spot while Asma'u and the customer were seriously injured," the witness said.A hawker who luckily escaped from the crash, said group of hawkers were sitting at a spot when they saw the tipper heading towards them and fled for safety.
Our reporter learnt that the driver (of the green Meiller Kipper truck with foreign registration number W ES 16) took to his heels and has not been seen as at the time of this report.
A relative of one of the injured, Asmau, said the noise attracted him to the scene of the accident.
"Knowing that my sister sells in that spot, I rushed to the scene and saw my sister in pains with her leg severed and her friend dead," Asmau said.
The injured were taken to a nearby hospital, while the remains of the dead were removed by onlookers.
