Nigeria: Unity School Agbarho Marks 35 Anniversary

One of the landmark schools built in the old Mid - Western State of Nigeria, Unity School Agbarho (USA), a comprehensive special school conceived to nurture the academic interest of the region would be marking her 35th Anniversary on Saturday, November 7, 2009.

In a statement jointly signed by the Protem Public Relations Officer of the organising committee, Mr. Tunde Ekpekurede and Dan Agbofode,a member the event will hold at the college Grounds , with a special anniversary ceremony from 10:00a.m.

According to the statement, the Delta State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs. Juliet Oti Aguba is expected to be the Special Guest of Honour while Dr. Ade Elempe, the pioneer principal of the school will Chairman of the occasion.

The statement indicated that as part of activities marking the occasion, Unity School Agbarho Old Students' Association (USAOSA) are commencing in earnest the programme of re-generating their alma mater with the unveiling of a block of renovated classrooms implemented under her medium-term development programme: Project 2014'.

'Project 2014 is planned to wind-up in 2014, to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Unity School. It is to provide a platform for engaging with the Delta State Government, indigenes of Agbarho community and philanthropists to restore the school to its former position of pre-eminence in Nigeria'.

'Unity School Agbarho was started under the military regime of Dr Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia in the then Mid-West state on November 4, 1974, with primaries four, five and six pupils who eventually graduated to the secondary arm. The first school products of the school completed their secondary education in 1980, recording some unassailable performances in the West African School Certificate examinations, and USA quickly became the benchmark for quality education across the state at that time'.

A military coup in 1975 resulted in a change in administration in the state and a reversal of the school's special status. A lowering of academic standards and performance of the students soon became evident.

'The school has now been converted to a model, boarding school under the present democratic setting, but the old students under the leadership of Arc. Emmanuel Abulu wants the School to function as originally conceived'.

'The 35th anniversary celebrations are expected to bring the past and present students of USA, together. USAOSA's President, Arc. Emmanuel Abulu, the principal of the Senior School, Mrs. Patricia Roli Oghuvbu and principal of the Junior School, Mr. O. D. Okoro are the chief hosts'The celebrations will be rounded off with a dinner at Hotel Excel, Effurun.
