Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has said the state government can't stop the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly called Okada, across the metropolis until it is able to provide alternative and efficient transportation system for the residents.
Fashola made the declaration yesterday during the eighth Annual Conference of Women in Management and Business in Lagos, yesterday.
The declaration was sequel to request made by some women at the conference on the need to stop the operation of commercial motorcyclists, describing it as a menace that had led to the death of some of their members.
In his response, the governor said: "The state government cannot wipe off the commercial motorcyclists until we are able to provide an effective transportation system.
According to him, it will be very difficult for the government to protect the rich people when it has failed to provide for the poor, adding: "I think before we can fully regulate the operation of Okada, we must have provided our rail transportation, which is another fast means of transportation."
