Abuja — The FCT Administration has suspended the collection of new land charges in the territory, following the criticism that trailed its introduction.
The Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Media and Publicity, Alhaji Abdullahi Zuru, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Abuja that the suspension was ordered by the National Assembly.
Zuru explained that the FCTA and National Assembly were serving the interests of Nigerians, adding that a public hearing on the issue had been slated for Thursday in Abuja.
The FCTA had in August announced increases in all land related charges, including rents, levies and application fees. It said that revenue generated from the charges would be used for the provision and maintenance of infrastructure.
The new rates, the administration added, were also expected to eliminate unwholesome practices in land speculation in the city. Land processing application fee was reviewed upward and harmonised from N20,000 for commercial and N50,000 for residential to N100,000.
