The criminal trial of one Sirah Gomez commenced yesterday, November 2, 2009, before Justice Moses Richards of the Special Criminal Court in Banjul.

The accused is standing trial on two counts of murder and concealment of birth. The accused was alleged to have unlawfully caused the death of her new born baby by tying her in a nylon bag on July 4, 2009 at Fajara Barracks in Bakau, KSMD and also concealing the birth of her newborn birth.

The accused pleaded guilty to the charge of murder but denied concealing the birth of her baby. The defence counsel, Lawyer Ana Njie, expressed concern for her client and told the court that she wanted the defendant to undergo medical examination to determine her state of mind.

Justice Richards disclosed that there is no psychiatrist that can tell the court now what her state of mind was as at July 4, 2009 after six months. Justice Richards said some women suffer some degree of insanity during their time of delivery, but it is not permanent.

Hearing continues on November 10, 2009.
