THE Police at Tsumeb are investigating a case in which Allan Douglas Haimene claims to have been assaulted by about 20 Police officers the previous weekend.
The Police have a different version of what happened to Haimene, though.
Haimene told The Namibian that he was walking past the regional headquarters of the Police in Tsumeb when about 20 police officers approached him and assaulted him till he was unconscious. He claimed that the Police then dumped him in the bush on the outskirts of the town. He claimed that he then walked to a nearby club where two young men helped him to get to the hospital.
Police spokesperson Hophni Hamufungu, on the other hand, said that Haimene was found lying in the road near the Police headquarters at Tsumeb.
Officers at first thought he was dead but upon closer inspection realised that he was alive and took him to hospital.
According to Hamufungu, Haimene laid criminal charges against unknown people who had allegedly assaulted him and stolen his cellphone.
Hamfungu said the Oshikoto regional commander started investigating the case after rumours of Police brutality started making the rounds at Tsumeb this week.
