Tunis — The Jemmal Science Center (governorate of Monastir) hosted on Sunday a meeting on "The history of aviation and aerospace".
The meeting was the occasion to present a book entitled "les ailes des Hommes" by Mr. Bouraoui Ben Ali the first Tunisian captain, chairman of the Tunisian Organization for Aerospace Education (OTEAS).
The book refers to one of the oldest dreams of man, flying like a bird.
Released in 2005, in Paris by the Pharos edition, the book, written in French, focuses on the history of aviation and the many attempts by men to conquer the air.
The author focuses mainly on Ibn Abbes Farness's attempts to fly with artificial wings (in 816 AD). Reportedly, this Andalusian aviator was able to fly with the wings he had made, but failed to land.
He stressed that Tunisia entered the great adventure of aviation from the early twentieth century, after experiencing an era of ballooning, two centuries ago.
"The second edition of this book will be published soon", said Mr Ben Ali Bouraoui.
He also announced that the Jammel Science Center will host workshops on airplane and rocket manufacturing. This initiative "aims to sensitize young people to science and innovation", he said.
