One Amadou Jarra, a Malian who standing trial on two counts of murder, last Thursday, October 29, 2009, told the special criminal court, presided over by Justice Moses Richards, that he stabbed the two deceased persons because they were raining provocative insults on him and his parents.

The accused is alleged to have murdered both Nyimasata Ceesay and Kintin Fatty by stabbing them with a knife on March 2, 2009 at Kerewan in the North Bank Region. The suspect, in his defence, said prior to the day of the incident he never had any problem with his guardian nor with the two wives (Nyimasata Ceesay and Kinting Fatty), stressing that their relation was cordial.

The accused said he knew the deceased persons through their husband who met him at the compound of the alkalo of Kerewan and decided to take him home. The accused said on March 2, 2009 at around midnight, he was sitting on the verandah with the two women when they started raining provocative insults at him and his parents.

The accused said he was so irritated that when he saw a knife, he took it and stabbed both women. At this point, the defence counsel, S Jaharteh, told the court that she was withdrawing her representation for the accused noting that the evidence of the accused had weakened her strategy for his defence.

In his response, Justice Moses Richards stated that the accused is a honourable man who has done wrong and accepted his responsibility. He rejected the defence counsel's application, noting that Lawyer Jaharteh's withdrawal would delay the court proceedings.

The accused continued his testimony and said after stabbing the women, some of their husband relatives, who were armed with machetes chased him with the intent to kill him, but he was rescued by the police who arrested him and took him to the Kerewan police station. The trial continues on November 3, 2009.
