Botswana: DCEC Drags BDP Politician to Court

Isaiah Morewagae

3 November 2009

A Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) activist has been arraigned in court for giving false information to a public officer.

Bontlogetse Prince Kgwaneng, who previously served as a ruling party nominated councillor in the Central District and a Land Board officer in Serowe, has been dragged to court by the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crimes (DCEC). He will appear in court again on November 16.

It is said that in January 2001 at Serowe, with intent to deceive, Kgwaneng falsely stated in Land Board application forms that he had consulted concerned parties over a borehole he wanted to purchase.

Due to the false information, the Land Board issued him with the rights to sink or drill a borehole at Ditawana in the Central District, while he had never consulted even one of the people he was supposed to have before he got the green-light.
