Liberia: 'Stop Jeopardizing the Investigation' - PUL Cautions Journalists

4 November 2009

The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has expressed disdain over recent media reports regarding the ongoing investigation in the scandal at the Ministry of Information.

Recently over 300,000 United States Dollars scandal was discovered at the ministry of Information, with the comptroller, the Chie Accountant and the minister Information Rev. Dr. Lawrence Bropleh have all been suspended by president Sirleaf.

Minister Bropleh, the Comptroller and Chief Accountant are under investigation by the ministry of Justice and the Liberian National Police to determine who those are involved in the scandal.

But the PUL who has been following the investigation says it is troubled by the conflicting headlines in the print media and made specific reference to the bold headline of the Inquirer Newspaper in its Monday, October 26, edition captioned: "Bropleh Vindicated".

The Union says while it maintains earlier position not to shield any of its members implicated in the scan, cautions journalists and media institutions not to jeopardize the ongoing investigation. As an advocate for social justice, a release from the Union says, the Union will never celebrate punishment of the innocent, but observed that such hasty conclusion could either undermine the probe or work against the accused.

The Union noted that it agrees with Dr. Bropleh when he called on the public to reserve their judgment until the investigation is concluded, but lest expected that the media and some journalists could be the one to pass the pre-trail verdict.

Meanwhile the Union is challenging the media not to allow the Harry Greaves LPRC saga to die naturally, and maintained that after preliminary investigation by the Ministry of Justice, the Union believes there is a probable cause to send the matter to court, something the Union said is the media responsibility to follow up.

"Until the government can muster the courage to press charges against those who are suspected of wrong doing regardless of who they are, it will lack the moral authority to fight against crime and corruption in the country" The Union observed.
