Gambia: Njoben Villagers And Their Alkalo Under Arrest and Detention

On Friday 30th October 2009, report reached the Foroyaa that a large number of elderly people and some youths of Njoben village in the Fulladu district of the CRR South have been arrested by the police and brought to the police headquarters in Banjul

Banjul According to our source, the arrests were made by armed PIU personnel who arrived from Bansang.. The villagers were said to have been brought by an open truck all the way from Bansang about 300 kilometers away from Banjul, the capital.

It was found out that the arrests took place not only at Njoben but at different villages including Kolley Kumba, Bansang and Foni. According to my sources, the arrests are linked to a village hand pump that became dysfunctional and was later allegedly sold as scrap metal. It is not clear what the charges are. .Attempts to reach the PRO to get the details of the allegations was unsuccessful .Follow up will be done to shed more light on the matter.
