Liberia: 500,000 Ballot Papers Here for By-Election

The Chairman of the National Elections Commission (NEC) Cllr. James Fromoyah has announced the arrival 500,000 ballot papers in the country from Accra, Ghana for the November 10 by-election.

He said the ballot papers, which were brought in Sunday, are now in a secured storage under the protection of UNMIL until preparations are finalized to have them distributed amongst the 937 polling places spread across 280 voting precincts in the county.

Addressing a news conference Monday in Monrovia, Cllr. Fromayan said the Montserado County by-election exercise has made the commission to spend a little over US$136,950 so far.

Thy amount has been spent on printing ballot papers, replacement of voters' registration cards including logistical preparations for the success of the by-election.

The NEC Chairman said logistical preparations for the Monserrado County senatorial by-election are well on course, and NEC has since begun transporting training and polling materials from its three warehouses to various polling places across the 14 electoral Districts of the county.

He said the deployment of polling materials and staff as well as sensitive materials will be done between November 8 and 9, 2009.

The Commission has disclosed that over 40, 900 lost and damaged voter cards were restored to owners to enable them participate in the by-election.

Meanwhile, the NEC Chief expressed satisfaction over the manner in which the 10 candidates in by-election have conducted their campaign so far. He stated that the candidates have been freely presenting their respective platforms to the 495,519 registered voters of the county.

NEC Chairman Fromayan noted that training of trainers for polling staff began since November 1, and about seven teams of trainers will be deployed across the county to conduct training for about 4,500 polling staff, to include presiding officers, voter identification officers, Inkers, precincts assistants and ballot paper issuers.

He said security arrangements for the by election are being coordinated with UNMIL. 620 Liberia National police (LNP) officers along with UNMIL will provide security.
