Kenya: Alarm as Sewer Pollutes Water

4 November 2009

Nairobi — Mombasa residents are consuming contaminated water. At least 20 people have been diagnosed with different waterborne diseases in the town over the past one week.

Mombasa Water Company technical manager Stephen Oluoch said the old sewer lines were leaking, hence contaminating domestic water. "We have received complaints from Chaani and Buxton residents," he said.

However, he blamed Mombasa council for failing to rehabilitate malfunctioning sewer lines. He said Mowasco is only supposed to supply water.

But Mombasa Town Clerk Tubman Otieno said it was wrong for the water company to supply contaminated water and fail to take quick action to disconnect contaminated water lines.
