Ghana: Krachi-DCE Worried Over Poor Revenue Collection

Kete-Krachi — The Krachi-West District Chief Executive, Mr. Moses Kwame Punyah has expressed worry over the poor performance of the revenue collectors of the Assembly and charged them to change their attitude towards work.

According to him the bad performance of the revenue collectors had negatively affected the internally generated fund, which is vital in implementing development projects relevant to the development needs of the people.

Mr. Punyah who expressed these sentiments when he addressed the second ordinary meeting of the Assembly at Kete-Krachi recently noted that even though the Common Fund was being used to tackle development projects in the area, the Assembly could not depend totally on it to deal with the development aspirations of the people.

The Krachi-West DCE told the Assembly that the era where assemblies depended mostly on the Common Fund for every aspect of development was over and that the Assembly could become more successful if it improves on its revenue collection system to generate more funds to complement that of the Common Fund.

Mr. Punyah disclosed that out of the GH¢78,000, 703.60 projected for this year, the Assembly only collected GH¢35,000, 960.35 as at the end of August 2009, which he said was not only unsatisfactory but also unacceptable and urged the personnel at the revenue collection unit to examine themselves in order to identify the causes that led to the poor performance.

He announced that the Assembly received GH¢1,367,130.53 as the Assembly's share of the Common Fund for the first quarter of 2009. The DCE stressed the need for the Assembly Members to be active in their respective communities to help educate the people on issues of development and their role in achieving development in the communities through collaborative efforts with the Assembly.

Mr. Punyah also asked the members of the Area and Town Councils as well as Unit Committee Members to be active and reliable in dealing with issues that affect the development of the people. He announced that the District had been selected as one of the best twenty high performing Districts in the country under the Rural Enterprise Project to participate in the initiative in the Rural Enterprise Growth and Employment Generation programme over the next two years.
