Tunis — During the 21st RCD Symposium held on Tuesday, Mr. Chedli Ayari, economics professor and former minister called for speeding up the implementation of President Ben Ali's recommendation to create a World Solidarity Fund in order to overcome the current economic crisis. In 2002 the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted President Ben Ali's recommendation.
The speaker also called for the creation of a United Nations Council for security and development.
According to him, the global economic system must have a human dimension, privileging solidarity and long-term commitments, noting that the current crisis has shown structural dysfunctions rather than cyclical dysfunction.
He suggested the rehabilitation of the central role of the state so that it provides the economic system with humanism, solidarity and sustainability, while stressing the importance of the contribution of civil society and the private sector to this threefold moral requirement.
Mr. Ayari stressed that the most important conclusion reached by the Pittsburgh Summit (United States, September24 and 25, 2009), is the proposal to convert the G-20, to a forum of globalization which aims at strengthening international economic cooperation and "achieve sustainable and balanced economic development level".
