Nairobi — The nine-hole Njoro Country Club, one of the oldest clubs in the country, will this weekend stage the third edition of the Amani golf series whose objective is to foster friendship and peaceful coexistence among different communities.
The first event was held at the same venue about three months ago, followed by the second one at Machakos Golf Club last month where over 40 players from various clubs in the Central Rift travelled to Machakos, which apparently is the only golf club in the whole of Eastern Province.
Dubbed the "Rift Valley/Eastern Clubs Amani Golf Series", this weekend's tournament will be sponsored by Spion Construction Company courtesy of Machakos club member, Jackson Ndunda, currently based in the Rift Valley, and N.I.C bank.
"This idea was born out of the need to foster peace, goodwill and reconciliation among the various communities as a results of what happened early last year due to the 2007 general election" said Ndunda.
Entries are expectecd from Machakos, Railways, Kenya Airforce, Golf Park and Kiambu. Within the Central Rift entries have already been received from Nakuru, Naivasha, Kericho, Eldoret and hosts.
Meanwhile, the Kenya Airways Golf Safari, which the airline is using to promote Kenya as a golf tourist destination, will now be an annual event.
The Kenya Airways marketing and corporate communications department plans to increase the number of countries hosting the series, which started in March in Cameroon and later visited South Africa, UK, Ethiopia, Zambia, China, Senegal, Tanzania, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Cote D'Ivoire and Ghana.
A total of 60 players are expected to travel to Nairobi this week for the grand finale at Muthaiga on Friday where they will be join by local Kenya Airways guests mainly Tour operators.
