Zimbabwe:Danhiko School to Hold Visual Arts Exhibition

5 November 2009

Harare — DANHIKO School will hold a visual arts exhibition dubbed "Graphic Sign Language Strengthening Sign Expressions" from November 9 to 15.

The exhibition seeks to enlighten people on the importance of sign language as a mainstream mode of communication.

Artist and curator of the exhibition Mainford Ndlovu said that every language was important in its own right and called for support for different modes of communication.

It was against this background that the organisers thought it appropriate to highlight and sensitise hearing, speaking, and deaf and dump people to appreciate sign language, which was still being considered less important than other forms of communication. The curator of the exhibition strongly believes that they should use art to drive their point home.

"Art should play a pivotal role in bringing together people of all walks of life, regardless of their status, ability or disability," he said.

Artworks to be displayed would be in the form of photographs, banners, interactive cost-shirts and posters amongst others.

Ndlovu studied creative art and design at Chinhoyi University of Technology.

Having been to the Jairos Jiri Association to acquaint himself with the sign language as a discipline, Ndlovu hopes to use these skills to introduce sign language to the people of Zimbabwe and the world at large.

"The graphic sign language just like visual language has no barriers.

"It allows every individual to relate to an image in their own way depending on their personal experiences and preferences," Ndlovu said.

The exhibition aims to bridge the gap between those who speak and hear with their counterparts who cannot speak and hear.
