The Court of Appeal has set November 17 the date for the hearing of an appeal by the former Director of Economic Affairs in the Internal Security Organisation, Mr Teddy Seezi Cheeye.
Mr Cheeye is challenging the 10-year jail term that was handed to him by Justice John Bosco Katutsi, the head of the Anti-Corruption Court, for embezzling Shs120 million Global Fund money that was meant to fight Malaria, HIV and Tuberculosis. He was bailed after paying Shs60 million pending the hearing of his appeal.
The appeal will be heard by a panel of three judges; George Engwau, Amos Twinomujuni and Constance Byamugisha.
Fresh investigations
This comes on the backdrop of fresh investigations against Mr Cheeye over allegations that the former ISO boss got involved in the kidnap and extortion of a Kampala businessman two weeks ago.
Mr David Senfuka was allegedly kidnapped by security operatives attached to ISO and the Rapid Response Unit on trumped up charges of murder and child sacrifice.
After torturing and extorting Shs25 million from him to drop the charges, the kidnappers drove Mr Senfuka to the parking yard of Mr Cheeye's office and abandoned him there, according to Police Spokesperson Ms Judith Nabakooba.
She said the Force is interested in why Mr Cheeye was contacted after Mr Senfuka's detention.
