Zambia: Contractors On Site to Work On Two Solwezi Projects

5 November 2009

CONTRACTORS have moved on site in Solwezi to give the civic centre a facelift and install street lights in a project expected to cost the local authority about K1.7billion.

Town Clerk Jim Zya and project coordinator Kelly Mwebe confirmed in Solwezi, the arrival of the two Copperbelt-based companies, Ricka General Contractors and Saloba of Kitwe.

"The two contractors have moved on site to start the works at the civic centre and installation of street lights," Mr Zya said of the projects scheduled to take about 23 and 19 weeks, respectively.

He said Ricka would construct a new council chamber and extend the civic centre, while Saloba, who have since started excavations, would install street lights from Solwezi General Hospital to Kyawama Township.

Mr Mwebe, a council town planner, said construction of the new council chamber and extension of the civic centre which would be done in two phases, would cost K693 million while the street lighting project would cost K1 billion.

The works at the civic centre and the installation of streetlights are among the first major projects to be undertaken by the local authority from property rates it receives from Kansanshi Mine.

The local authority, which had also started maintenance of urban and feeder roads, plans to construct a public lavatory, a refuse bay and sink a borehole at the council rest house.

After approving a service delivery project of about K3 billion recently, the council proposes in its 2010 budget of K25 billion to spend K3.4 billion on maintenance of urban and feeder roads and K1.4 billion on land demarcation and surveying.

K1.1 billon has been set aside for development of wards with each ward, receiving K51 million while K600 million would go towards maintenance and putting up of street lights.

The local authority is likely to spend K100 million on the preparation of the supplementary valuation roll that is expected to capture Lumwana Mining Company, which started production last December.
