Nigeria:Manufacturers Invest N5 Billion in Carpet Industry

5 November 2009

Abuja — Carpet manufacturers in the country said that they have invested over N5 billion in the industry in the last two years.

President of the Carpet Manufacturers Association of Nigeria Mohit Manglani said this at a press conference yesterday in Lagos.

He said the investment was on technology and state-of-the-art machineries that can bolster carpet production in the country.

"We believe in the Nigerian manufacturing sector. We try to encourage more consumption of locally made carpets. I believe more people will join us as we expand so as to save the industry from extinction", he said.

Mohit appealed to Nigerians to patronize locally made carpets, saying this is the only way to encourage manufacturers to continue to produce high quality and affordable carpets in the country.

He said there is no economic sense in importing fairly used carpets into the country, saying patronizing locally made carpets would save the country lots of foreign exchange as well as create job opportunities.

According to him, the importation of Nigerian made carpets to the United States of America early this year is a manifestation that the product is internationally certified and can withstand their counterparts abroad. Mohit stated that the cost of doing business in the country, especially energy cost has continued to shatter the hopes of carpet manufacturers and called on the Federal government to arrest the situation.

He appealed to the Federal government to create special incentives for carpet manufacturers who have managed to survive the harsh economic climate in the country.
