Nigeria: FRSC Transfers Stolen Vehicle to Police

Abuja — The Nyanya unit of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) yesterday transferred a stolen car it recovered to the Mararaba Police Division.

The car, a Nissan Sunny with registration number CY763LND, was said to have been stolen from one Pastor Adam Innocent, a resident of Mararaba in the early hours of October 29, 2009.

FRSC Unit Commander of Nyanya, Godwin Apochi, said FRSC officials saw the stolen car wrongly parked along the road in the morning of October 29, 2009 at around 8 am.

"The car was obstructing free flow of the traffic and FRSC official requested for the driving license and other vehicle particulars of the car from the driver, who could not produce them and promised to go back home them.

Apochi said the driver claimed the vehicle belonged to his uncle, adding that when the officials waited for the particulars for a long time, they decided to push the car off the road and continued waiting at the scene for the driver to bring the documents.

"A passerby saw the car and alerted our men that it was a stolen car, which prompted us to take the car to the FRSC office, after which they informed the Mararaba police about their discovery and got a feed back from the police that the car theft case had been reported in their station and the car registration number tallied with the stolen one.

Our reporters learnt that the police, after ascertaining that the stolen car was in the possession of the FRSC, wrote a letter to the FRSC, demanded that the car be forwarded to them for onward transfer to the owner.

Receiving the key of the car, the Divisional Traffic Officer of Mararba Police Division, Musa Abubakar, thanked the FRSC for helping the police to recover the vehicle and pledged that the car will be returned to the owner.

Abubakar advised motorists to be security conscious and secure their vehicles in order to make it difficult for thieves to steal them.

He advised motorists to promptly alert the police whenever their cars are stolen.

The car owner, Pastor Adam, said he was impresses at the way the FRSC and police handled the situation which led to the recovery of his vehicle.
