Abuja — A father, Mr Apochi, wants the police to explain to him how his 27-year -old son, Mike Apochi was attacked near Kasham Hotel at Nyanya on Monday that eventually led to his death.
He said one Sergeant John Onu of the Nyanya Police Station invited his son to the station on Monday evening to make a statement and on their way to the station, the sergeant said he forgot his car keys in his house and left Mike at a spot close to Kasham Hotel.
"While my son was waiting for the sergeant to get his car keys to drive him to the station, a group of hoodlums, who are children to policemen used woods to hit my son on the head, which led to his death," Mr Apochi lamented.
Mike's father disclosed that when he returned from work on Monday afternoon, he meet one Jennifer threatening his son because her boyfriend told her that his son advised him to stop having an affair with her.
"I immediately went to Nyanya Police Station to lodge a report and was given policemen to arrest the girl, who was no where to be found but to my surprise the police came for my son in the evening of that day and said my son was needed to make a statement and the only thing we heard later was that he has been attacked close to Kasham Hotel," the father said.
He said Mike was rushed to the police station before the police later took him to the hospital.
"At the police station, we met Jennifer who had already made a statement against my son but unfortunately my son was brought in an unconscious state that led to her arrest," the father said.
Apochi's elder son, Daniel, said his junior brother's problem began when he separated a quarrel between a girl called Jennifer and her boyfriend, a Nyanya Market butcher called Chidi.
He said the butcher confided in Mike that he gave Jennifer N70,000 out of N100,000 that she requested for, adding that Mike also advised the butcher who was his friend,
"The butcher went back to Jennifer to tell her all Mike said and Jennifer, who is also a girl friend to some policemen, came to our home to confront Mike with the allegations and threatened to deal with him," Daniel said.
He said Jennifer came furiously to their apartment to warn Mike's mother and sister that she will deal with him for telling her boyfriend not to give her the balance of N30,000.
"Jennifer is also known to be associated with the hoodlums that smoke Indian hemp at Nyanya Cemetery and Mike told us before he gave up the ghost that she was the cause of his problem as well as named Henry, alias Mature, Snake and Thompson as those that attacked him that night," Daniel stated.
Another relation of late Mike said those associated with Mike's death are children of policemen that have killed before in the area.
He linked one of their killings to the son of a police inspector and said they are being left to wonder around freely despite their atrocities.
"During Mike's funeral, the younger brother to one of those that caused his death was pointed out to us and we apprehended and handed him over to the police," the relation said.
The relation lamented that apart from Jennifer, the police are yet to arrest the real suspects, whose identities are known.
"Jennifer, who is friendly with the police has up to five case files at Nyanya Police Station and can easily tell the police how to get those she recruited to deal with Mike," the relation alleged.
He said the police are busy arresting innocent persons randomly instead of looking for the real suspects, who are children of serving police officers.
Reacting to the death, the Divisional Police Office of Nyanya Police Station said the police responded immediately the report was made to them and arrested three persons in connection with the incident.
"Those arrested have been transferred to the FCT Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation," he said.
