Police are holding a head teacher and his deputy after 12 unidentified pupils were allegedly found sitting Primary Leaving Examinations in their school in Mubende District on Tuesday.
Mr Henry Kalulu, the deputy Police spokesperson, said: "Twelve candidates of Mubende Tiger Primary School were found in the examination room but their photographs were not corresponding with the ones in the Uganda National Examinations Board register."
Of the 12 pupils, 10 had identity cards but their photographs were not in the Uneb photo album. These were: Osbert Muheirwe, Michael Buziga, Habib Ramu Kaguma, Peter Kabirigo, Solomon Kiiza, Godffrey Sekono, Francis Akol, Tony Muwonge, Ambrose Ongia and Walter Otim.
For Justine Zawede, she had the name Christine added on the identity card but which was not in the Uneb album while the other pupil had registered with Uneb as Elizabeth Nantongo yet her ID had Liz Nantongo.
According to Mr Kalulu, the pupils had been in school for the whole year and registered with Uneb "but their photographs do not appear in the Uneb photo album. Instead, there are other different photographs."
Mr Kalulu said the suspects, the head teacher Mr Majid Selunobe and his deputy Vincent Bwanika are in police custody at Mubende Police Station as inquiries into the matter continue.
Uneb Secretary Mathew Bukenya said no malpractices had been recorded but added that he was waiting to receive a report about the exercise.
More culprits
Meanwhile, three teachers have also been arrested in eastern Uganda for their alleged involvement in examination malpractice.
Two of the suspects, Patrick Odoi and David Omudet were arrested from Tororo and Busia. The two are accused of aiding pupils of Tiira Primary School in Busia and Peipei Primary School in Tororo District to cheat the just-ended exams.
Mr Ibni Ssekumbi, the eastern region Police spokesperson, explained that Mr Odoi, an invigilator, was arrested for helping pupils of Peipei Primary School to answer questions.
Ssekumbi says David Omudet, another invigilator from Ajuket Primary School in Busia, was arrested for giving out his appointment letter to another teacher.
