Sokoto — Sokoto State government is to sink 32 solar motorized boreholes in 13 local government areas of the state at the cost of N270 million.
State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Muhammad Jabbi Kilgori, made this known to newsmen at Government House Sokoto.
He said the move was aimed at addressing problems of acute water shortage being faced by some rural communities in the state, assuring that the project will be completed in nine months.
Kilgori stated that the project will be executed under the State Rural Water Supply Scheme, pointing out that, solar is the most sustainable at the moment due to its low cost.
According to him, the government embarked on the move in view of the rising cost of fuel and the challenges inherent in its procurement in the rural areas.
He disclosed that each borehole would be sunk at the cost of N8 million which include fencing, provision of tanks and other installations.
Kilgori further said food grains has been procured by the state government and will be sold to the public at a subsidised rate.
He stressed that it was part of government efforts to cushion the shortage of output of grains across the state and also alleviate the suffering of the people.
The Commissioner added that some parts of the state witnessed shortage of rainfall and low crop performance, adding that the gesture will go a long way in addressing the problem.
