The Oasis Project Youth Association (OPYA) of Bakau, last Saturday, embarked on a massive cleansing exercise at the Katchikally Crocodile Pool and its surroundings at Bakau.
The aim of the exercise is to promote healthy environment in the community. In an interview with the Daily Observer shortly after the exercise, Luntang Jaiteh, the alkalo of Bakau, commended the members of the youth association for their hardwork, dedication and for the love they have for Bakau. "As you all know the tourist season has just begun and Bakau is a tourist attraction particularly Katchikally," he said. He thanked the members of OPYA and all those who helped in cleaning the area and the Bakau Ward Committee for their assistance.
For his part, Malang Keita, president of the association, disclosed that since their inception in January their association has been participating in cleaning exercises. That have also been involved in series of entertainment and fund raising activities at Sun Beach Hotel, among others.
According to him, his association has also contributed to the food self-sufficiency drive by weeding a rice farm belonging to His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya A.J.J Jammeh.
He added that his association in collaboration with the Oasis project UK, has organized and opened an eye screening scheme at the Bakau community centre and that many people in the community benefited from the gesture. Recently, he said, they have also donated some food items and cleaning materials worth D1500 to a family at Bakau Katchikally, as part of their activities. Abdoulie Kanteh, Public Relations officer of the association; Yafatou Bojang, vice president and the OPYA members, thanked the community for their contribution to the achievements of the association.
