Modou Kanteh in Foni

4 November 2009

The Gambia Red Cross Society (GRCS), on Saturday, concluded a three-day workshop on shelter kits training, held in Bwiam in Foni.

The training brought together 25 Red Cross volunteers across the country aimed at equipping Red Cross volunteers at the grassroots level with the skills of making shelter kits whenever disaster occurs. Speaking at the closing ceremony, Ousman Jallow, the society youth director, said the forum was really participatory and urged the participants to disseminate the knowledge they acquired during the training to their colleagues. Jallow commended the coordinators of the training for a job well done.

Lamin Gassama, a member of the GRCS, said the training was meant to strengthen the knowledge of the volunteer at the grassroots level. This, he said, will enable them to respond to any emergency without waiting for officials from the head office. He appealed to the participants to always show respect and dignity to the people they are to serve. Certificates were awarded to participants at the end of the training. Buba Darbo, the National Disaster Management Committee coordinator for GRCS chaired the ceremony.
