Enugu — Enugu state government yesterday cautioned contractors handling various projects in the state against doing sub-standard jobs as that could lead to outright sanction of such a contractor.
The government however pledged its readiness to complete and commission all ongoing capital and infrastructural development projects in the state before the end of the current term of the Governor Sullivan Chime administration.
Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Communications Mr. Chukwudi Achife, told newsmen in Enugu that the projects had been designed to address the peculiar and pressing needs and challenges of people in all sectors of the state economy in both urban and rural areas.
Achife stressed that despite the hurdles posed by the paucity of funds, the Governor has recorded a high rate of success and progress in his avowed bid to restore Enugu to its past glory, adding that most of the dilapidated infrastructure in the state had been reactivated while new ones were being put in place.
He said within only two years of Chime's administration, over 200 hundred kilometres of urban roads and over 148 kilometers of rural roads have been completed and in use while work is on going on an additional 150 kilometers of rural roads designed in such a way as to connect all the local government areas and form a network of roads around Enugu city.
Achife said the state government has succeeded in maintaining a comparatively secure and stable society while winning its war against environmental degradation and filth with the provision of state of the art waste disposal trucks and other equipment.
He said work was still going at full steam on the full rehabilitation of both Ajali Owa and Oji River water schemes to increase their water production levels from their present less than 20,000 cubic meters to 77,000 and 50,000 cubic meters daily respectively.
Work has however been completed on the water project at the Nsukka main campus of the University of Nigeria while on-going at the Iva Valley Water Scheme
Achife added that the government has also embarked on complete replacement of old and weak asbestos water pipes with new durable galvanized PVC pipes so as to withstand the pressure expected to come from the new system of water production.
On human development and poverty reduction, he said the government has embarked on a policy that has seen to the regular recruitment of staff into the state work force and the prompt payment of worker's salaries and allowances. This, he said, is in addition to creation of new institutions and programmes such as the much acclaimed Enugu Taxi and bus schemes, that have not only generated employment but have been offering vital training, as well as goods and services to the people.
He said, "All in all, we all can say without any fear of contradiction that this government has taken measures and embarked on policies that have impacted visibly, directly and concretely on the lives of the people.
This government has so far proven that it is a government that is concerned with improving the quality of lives of its peoples. Every sector and every facet of the state's economy has something new and revolutionary to boast of. Even the local government areas are awash with positive developmental activities because the examples, the pace and the facilities set down by Governor Chime".
