Nigeria: Awards N1.2 Billion Dam Contracts

Birnin Kebbi — Kebbi state government has awarded contracts for the construction of 18 earth dams at the cost of N1.2 billion.

State commissioner for water resources and rural development, Alhaji Hussaini Raha, who disclosed this in an interview with newsmen said the earth dams would be spread across the state.

According to him, the dams are to provide water for human consumption and livestock.

Raha said the dams would also provide opportunities for farmers to engage in irrigation farming in order to boost food production in the state, stressing that "the water will be preserved in the earth dams for use during the raining season."

The commissioner, who stated that the contract is expected to be completed in six months, said government had taken steps to ensure provision of water for both human and animal consumption throughout the year.

He explained that in line with the present administration's policy of providing dividends of democracy to the people, provision of water and social amenities are topmost on its agenda.

He said the ministry would not hesitate to deal decisively with any contractor who failed to execute his project(s) in accordance with the contractual specifications.

In another development, the new Chairman of the state chapter of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Alhaji Mohammed Dan-Ali, has commended the state government for its commitment to the provision of basic social amenities to the citizenry.

He said the executive of the association will do everything possible to complement government efforts in the promotion of Nomadic education and appealed to its members to continue to promote peaceful co-existence as the basic foundation for any meaningful progress and development.
