Kano — Kano State government has concluded all arrangements to sponsor 100 indigenes of the state to undergo an undergraduate medical training abroad.
This was disclosed by the Commissioner of Health, Malama Aishatu Isyaku Kiru, while receiving an interim report from members of the Committee on Special Programme for Kano Medical Students Training Abroad, set up by the state government two months back, to go round the 44 local governments and select those who qualify for sponsorship.
Malama Kiru attributed the development to the commitment of the present administration in the state, towards uplifting the standard of healthcare delivery services through increasing workforce in the state.
The commissioner stated that, because of the uncompromising attitude of the government to ensuring equity, justice and fairness to all the citizenry, the selection will be conducted across all the local governments of the state, adding that in an effort to give priority to women education, female students will make 40 per cent of those to be selected.
She lamented the complascency of some local government councils on the issue, as only 26 out of the 44 visited by the committee, submitted the list of their indigenes for screening.
The commissioner further advised members of the committee to involve village and ward heads with a view to achieving success in the exercise, and commended the committee for a job well done.
Submitting the report to the commissioner, chairman of the committee and the Director General, State Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Ibrahim Adamu Yakasai, said the committee has gone round all the 44 local governments of the state as well as Medicine Departments of some universities in order to compile a comprehensive report.
He said the committee has recommended the sending of those qualified for scholarship to Islamic-oriented Medical Institutions in Pakistan, Libya, Sudan, and United Arab Emirates.
