Ghana: Government Urged to Establish Vocational Training School at Gbadzeme

3 November 2009

The chiefs and people of Gbadzeme in the Avatime Traditional Area in the Ho Municipality have made a passionate appeal to the government, to establish a vocational training school in the town to assist in the provision of skills to youth who could not further their education, as well as people interested in acquiring skills.

According to the people, the establishment of such an institution would not be so difficult, because they proposed the usage of the structures of the old girls' school in the area, which was left without use, after the middle school system was phased out in the country.a

The Secretary to the Local Tourist Development Committee at Gbadzeme, Mr. Daniel Yao Avedzidah, who made the appeal on behalf of the people at Gbadzeme, explained that the school, established in the 1930s, served as one of the best girls' schools in the country, as many prominent women in positions attended the school.

Mr. Avedzida pointed out that the classroom block and dormitories used many years ago, were still available, but needed some sort of renovation works on the structures for conversion to a training school, adding that if the government established the school, it would go a long way to reduce the unemployment problem in the area.

He said local materials which were used to build the old structure, was a center of attraction to some foreign tourists who visited the area, but the community would be more satisfied if the government turned the structure into a vocational training school, noting that such assistance would best serve the interest of the community.

Mr. Avedzida disclosed that a foreign tourist, who visited the old structure some years back, saw wisdom in the proposal to turn the place into vocational training school, and assured them that he would personally start the process before any governmental assistance.

He said the old girls' school had no water facility, as well as electricity, but after showing interest in changing the old structure into a vocational training school, the tourist provided electricity and water to the old school, as part of preparations for the training school.

Mr. Avedzida said a few years after the man left, the community was informed about his death, a situation he stressed, which led to the current status of the old school, as nothing had been done about the dream he started, because the community members had not got enough funds to continue the project.
