ABOUT 3,985 new students pursing courses in Applied Science, Business and Management Studies, Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development, as well as Engineering, have been admitted into the Kumasi Polytechnic for various degree programmes.
Due to limitation of space and academic facilities, the Polytechnic could offer admission to 3,985 out of the 4,054 who qualified, of which 2,471 were male and 1,514 female.
At its 17th Matriculation ceremony held at its campus in Kumasi last Friday, Dr. B. E. Kwesi Prah, Rector of the institution, reminded the students that they were not going to be "spoon-fed" by the lecturers, as was done in their various Senior High schools.
"The lecturers are here to guide you; to lead you to discover the truth and gain a deeper insight into knowledge for yourselves, so it is your function, indeed, to educate yourselves in the Polytechnic," he stressed.
He then asked them to be "self-disciplined, with rigorous intellectual effort and moral self-mastery," and also to let the library and the internet be their companions to achieve their mission in the institution.
He also cautioned them to abide by the rules and regulations that govern the polytechnic, even though the Polytechnic discipline is more tranquil as compared to most of the second cycle schools, but warned them that the institution possesses quite severe sanctions for grave cases, of which the ultimate one was expulsion from the institution.
Dr. Kwesi Prah further advised the students to conduct their personal lives cautiously, in order not to engage themselves in any anti-social activities, or fall prey to examination malpractices, drug abuse, or become victims of the dreaded HIV/AIDS.
Mr. Isaac Yeboah, an alumnus and the Managing Director of WAHOME Company, advised the students to take tertiary education seriously, since "education is the only thing that can free one from poverty."
He further asked them to make sure that they get the necessary requirements they need for their education, to make the future a brighter one.
