Freetown — Ten women from the council of women councilors have returned home after attending a three-day conference at Indaba Hotel in Johannesburg, South Africa on the theme "Women in Politics".
Head of the delegation, Councilor Sembia Johnson of ward 382 told Concord Times that they discuss issues pertaining to the welfare of women in politics in order for them to compete with their male counterpart.
"We have the privilege of meeting our female counterparts in politics like Winnie Mandela and host of other female politicians," she said.
She said their trip was sponsored by United Nations development fund for women, UNIFEM adding that, Rwanda has 58% of women in major positions including politics.
Councilor Johnson admonished other women to join politics, while disclosing that they would organize training countrywide for their female counterparts.
She appealed for funding from donors to enable them run the affairs of the organization.
National coordinator of Network for women ministers and parliamentarians, Patricia Macauley said the conference was organized by the Intelligent Transfer Center in South Africa adding, "This is the first meeting to be held in Africa."
