Tanzania: When Raising School Fees Becomes A Problem

1 November 2009

Arusha — Fredrick K. Laizer, a Form Two student at Bishop Durning High School in Arumeru District is about to lose his opportunity for higher education. He cannot afford to pay his school fees after his sponsor, Theresa Catherine died in Canada on January 20, 2009.

According to 17-year-old Laizer who was born in Engaruka in Monduli District his guardians could not afford to pay for his education, but luckily he met with the Canadian tourist who volunteered to meet his education costs.

The Canadian Lady paid for his last two years of primary education as well as Form One at Bishop Durning High School. This year Laizer received the sad news that Catherine has died. He still has to pay Tsh.725,000 required as annual school fees but for this year he has only been able to raise Tsh.250,000. He is appealing for any kind of assistance that would enable him complete high school.

His second term academic report for last year shows that he attained third position out of 57 students.
