Uganda:More Charged Over Mabira Riots

5 November 2009

DP's Mukasa Mbidde and Makindye West MP Hussein kyanjo have been freshly charged with inciting violence and participating in the riots against the proposed sale of Mabira forest to an investor in 2007.

Mr Mbidde, Mr Kyanjo and their co-accused persons appeared before Buganda road court magistrate Geoffrey Sayekwo today but denied the charges.

The same court also issued criminal summons against Conservative Party president John Ken Lukyamuzi, to take plea on the same charges.

Last month, court re-opened the criminal case against two MPs and 26 others, who are accused of leading the demonstration against government. The case had been closed in August after prosecution failed to produce witnesses for almost a year.

The MPs included Kitgum woman MP Beatrice Anywar who was last month also charged with incitement of violence and participating in a demonstration and Mr Kyanjo.

Prosecution claims that on April 12, 2007 on Nasser and Kampala roads in defiance of directives given to Ms Anywar and the accused by the Police not to stage a demonstration, Ms Anywar led an illegal march. Anywar pleaded not guilty.

Mr Mbidde and Mr Kyanjo are expected to re-appear in court on 24th this month for mention of the case.
